  • Tropical rainforests are dense forests found in hot, wet regions near the Equator.
  • They have:

2. Location and climate of tropical rainforests

  • Tropical rainforests are mainly found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Climate characteristics

3. Vertical layers of the tropical rainforest

Tropical rainforests have a layered structure because different amounts of light reach different heights.

a) Emergent layer

  • The emergent layer is the topmost layer.
  • It consists of the tallest trees, which may grow up to about 40–60 m tall.
  • These trees rise above the rest of the forest and receive the most sunlight.

    • More exposure to rain and sun

b) Canopy

c) Understorey

  • The understorey is the layer beneath the canopy.
  • It receives much less sunlight because the canopy blocks most of it.

    • Large leaves to absorb more light
  • Animals found here include:
    • Insects
    • Reptiles
    • Small mammals
    • Some birds

d) Forest floor

  • The forest floor is the lowest layer.
  • Very little sunlight reaches this layer, often only about 1–2% of the sunlight from above.
  • It is dark, damp and rich in decomposing organic matter.
  • Dead plants and animals are broken down quickly by:
    • Fungi
    • Bacteria
    • Invertebrates such as termites
  • Nutrients released are taken up rapidly by plant roots.
  • Animals found here include:
    • Wild pigs
    • Insects

4. Adaptations of plants in tropical rainforests

An adaptation is a feature or behaviour that helps an organism survive in its habitat.

Plant adaptations

  • Drip tips
    • Leaves have pointed ends.
    • These help rainwater flow off quickly.
    • This prevents water from collecting and reduces growth of fungi and algae.
  • Waxy leaves
    • A waxy surface helps water run off.
  • Large leaves
    • Plants in the understorey have large leaves to capture more sunlight.
  • Buttress roots
    • Large, wide roots at the base of tall trees.
    • They support tall trees growing in shallow, nutrient-poor soil.
  • Shallow roots
    • Many rainforest trees have shallow spreading roots because most nutrients are found near the soil surface.
  • Thin, smooth bark
    • Since the climate is wet all year, trees do not need thick bark to prevent water loss or protect against cold.
  • Lianas
    • Woody climbing plants that use trees for support to reach sunlight.
  • Epiphytes
    • Plants that grow on other plants for support.
    • They are not parasites; they use the host plant only to reach light.

5. Adaptations of animals in tropical rainforests

  • Camouflage
    • Some animals blend into their surroundings to avoid predators or catch prey.
    • Example: stick insects, leaf-tailed animals
  • Strong limbs and gripping hands/feet
    • Arboreal animals such as monkeys need these to climb and move between branches.
  • Prehensile tails

8. Impacts of deforestation

a) Loss of biodiversity

  • Many plants and animals lose their habitats.

b) Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

  • Fewer trees means less photosynthesis.
  • Burning and decay of cleared trees release stored carbon dioxide.
  • This contributes to global warming and climate change.

c) Soil erosion

  • Without tree roots to hold the soil together, rain can wash away topsoil.
  • Topsoil is the upper layer of soil that contains most nutrients.
  • Loss of topsoil reduces soil fertility.

d) Flooding

  • Trees intercept rain and roots help water soak into the ground.
